Wicker lounge chair.

The term "wicker" is a technique that involves weaving and bending materials together.

Natural Wicker

Many natural materials such as paper, bamboo, various grasses, or thin woods can be used, but we will refer to natural rattan when referencing natural wicker in this guide.

Synthetic Wicker

Known for its high durability and resistance to rot and splintering compared to natural wicker. It is often capable of withstanding spills and hosing down due to its robust construction.

Cleaning

Natural Wicker

  • Using a can of compressed air, or a compressor, gently blow dirt and particles out of crevices. A dry toothbrush can be used for tricky areas.
  • With regular dusting and wiping, your piece will remain clean, however if for any reason it becomes grimy, a mild, oil based soap diluted with warm water will remove grime from furniture. Always test on an inconspicuous area first.

Synthetic Wicker

  • Use a mild detergent mixed with water and clean with a soft cloth. Air dry.

Accidents

Natural Wicker

  • Act quickly and blot any stains immediately with an absorbent cloth.
  • For water-based stains, mix a mild detergent with water. Dampen a soft cloth or sponge with the solution and gently blot the stained area. Be cautious not to saturate the rattan excessively.
  • For stubborn stains, you can try using a paste made of baking soda and water. Apply the paste to the stain, let it sit for a few minutes, and then gently scrub with a soft brush or cloth. Rinse thoroughly and dry.

Synthetic Wicker

  • Synthetic wicker will not stain easily; however, you must clean stains before they dry.
  • For any damages such as loose strands or unravelling, the piece should be taken to a professional sooner rather than later to prevent further damage.

Best Practices

  • Make vacuuming and dusting a routine, and it will avoid longer cleaning times due to dust and grime buildup.
  • Inspect occasionally for any snags or broken pieces. If so, consult with a professional. Ignoring this will only make it get worse rapidly.
